In the future certain features might be depreciated that aren't used by the community in general, but are heavily utilized by editors (like SMPTE timecode for example). Or someone could fork the code and create a divergent standard, which developers would have to decide to support or not. The developers could decide to haul off next year and radically redesign the container in such a way that breaks compatibility. And being open source there's no guarantees about its future.
